Listed below are the past and upcoming naginata events of the 2026 year!
Jan. 30-31: Edmonton Kyouka Renshu – Organized by Alan McDougall and led by Marija Landekic, this two-day practice in Edmonton drew participants from across Canada, and included a small grading and plenty of keiko.
Mar. 8: Ontario Regional Shiai Tournament – Thank you to Jonathan Lee for organizing this year’s shiai tournament in Toronto.
Mar. 23: Quebec City Keiko and Grading – The Concordia Naginata Club and several members of the Montreal Naginata Club travelled to Quebec City for a day of keiko and grading.
Mar. 28: Canadian Intercollegiate Naginata Tournament – The University of Toronto Naginata Club hosted the first ever Canadian intercollegiate tournament, bringing together students from the four Canadian university naginata clubs.
May 23: Toronto Naginata Tournament – Organized by Jordan Macklem, the tournament had a record number of participants, including a large cohort from the USA, across 85 matches.
June 26-28: INF International Naginata Seminar (Melbourne, Australia) – Hosted by the Australian Naginata Federation, with instruction from sensei from Japan and Australia. Canada was represented by Sam Zhou, Henintsoa Rakotomalala and Jeffree Chen.
June 27-28: CNF National Seminar – Held at the Association Récréative Milton-Parc in Montreal, with two days of practice and a grading on the Sunday.
Oct. 17: CNF National Tournament – This year’s national tournament will be held at St Francis of Assisi Catholic School, 80 Clinton St, Toronto. Engi, Individual Shiai and Team Shiai are open to all ranks, with a Kata demonstration open to 3-dan and above. Registration and payment are due September 30, and the tournament is open to CNF members only. Contact your dojo leader to register.
Nov. 14: Quebec Regional Taikai – The annual Quebec regional taikai will take place in Montreal.
Nov. 14-15: Midwest Naginata Seminar & Shinsa (Chicago, USA) – The Midwest Naginata Federation hosts its seminar and shinsa with guest sensei Tsukamaki-sensei from Seattle and Roche-sensei from New York. Grading is available up to 2-dan, and CNF members are welcome to attend. Email [email protected] if you are interested.
Looking ahead to 2027:
July 3: 2027 World Naginata Championships (Tokyo, Japan) – The WNC will be held at the Tokyo Budokan, 3-20-1 Ayase, Adachi-ku, Tokyo, from 09:00 to 17:00, followed by the Goodwill event on July 4.
July 4-7: Shimpan Seminar (Tokyo, Japan) – Running from 17:00 on July 4 to 17:00 on July 7. Participation is 30,000 JPY for three days.
July 5-7: 2027 INF Naginata Seminar (Tokyo, Japan) – Held alongside the championships, at the same 30,000 JPY participation fee.
